Begin creative development for version 3 of project 3.

Basic Guidelines for version 3:

• Visual Poem area should explore the modification and merging between your object based imagery (explored in version 1) and typography study (explored in version 1) components 
• Explore ways to join and unify the visual poem with the calendar text components in order to achieve a fluid composition
• Colors allowed: Black, white, plus 1 CYMK color

Additional ideas to consider:

• Analyze use of typographic and object based imagery with regards to basic design principles. 
• Composition should be evocative and rich--bring powerful imagery, memories feelings to mind
• Calendar system (day, month weeks) should indicate a VISUAL passing of time. 
• Stereotypical scenes or event of each month and/or literal depictions of your text passage is strongly discouraged

Version 3 review will take place next week. Print outs (trimmed to 10"x16") for all 12 months should be prepared for review Monday, Nov 7, 4:30pm.

Week 10 Day 2 (Wednesday, Oct 26) : Homework

Begin creative development for version 2 of project 3.

Basic Guidelines for version 2: Visual Poem area should consist of poetry typography (poem, lyric, literary passage, etc) only for two-thirds of document + calendar info area (name of month, days of week/month) restricted to remaining one-third of document, vertical orientation, only black/white (no grayscale) allowed.

Explore ways in which your typeface selection, size, weight, leading/tracking, can be interpreted as expressive typography. Your poetic type should effectively communicating the message of the season, month and poet. It is discouraged to rely solely on a literal depiction of your text passage or mimic the visual structure produced in your previous image only studies.

Version 2 review will take place next class session. Black + white print outs (trimmed to 10"x16") for all 12 months should be prepared for review Monday, Oct 31, 4:30pm.

Week 9 Day 2 (Wednesday, Oct 19) - Homework

Begin creative development for version/part 1 of project 3. Keep in mind the following guidelines for part 1: Image only (for two-thirds of document) + calendar info (month, days of week, days text restricted to remaining one-third of document), vertical orientation, only use black/white.

Imagery used in this project must be copyright free. Incorporating a variety of different mediums, drawings, ink/brushwork, cut/torn paper, photographs, masks, scans, found imagery should be considered in this image inspired phase of the project. Consider how your composition of imagery evokes the expressive qualities of your found text passage/poem/lyric.

As a group you are to develop a consistent calendar system that indicates the passing of time through an entire year. Consider how the various types of information such as day, month, week can be revealed clearly.

Review of version 1 of Project 3 test print for all months per group is due next Wednesday, Oct 26, 4:30pm.

Week 9 Day 1 (Oct 17) - Homework

1. Select your group members (there will be one group of three students), then figure out who will be responsible for the Winter(Dec, Jan, Feb), Spring(Mar, Apr, May), Summer (June, July, Aug), Autumn(Sept, Oct, Nov) month by the end of class today.

2. Based on your assigned season, find a quote, lyric, poem, or literary passage (between 3-4 lines in length) that relates to your months. This text selection should serve as a starting point for your conceptual studies and exploration in image development of your calendar months.

3. Construct a mood board, of images, colors, textures that relate to your chosen text passages. This mood board should serve as inspiration for your visual language/style within your calendar pages.

Both your selected text and mood boards will be reviewed during the next class session, Wednesday, Oct 19.

Project 3: Visual Poetry Calendar

Description:
Students will be working together in teams of 4 to create a twelve month calendar. Each student will be responsible for designing three posters that use imagery and words to convey a season. Together, the group will design a unified calendar system that creates a single visual story across all 12 pages.

Each group must utilize a consistent typographic system for the calendar information (days, weeks, months) on the page. There should be a singular conceptual mechanism from page to page within each group. The system that each groupdevelops must be flexible enough for individual designers to work with it as they develop their image area.

Specifications:
Size: 10" x 16" trimmed white paper (from 11" x 17" sheet, to allow for bleeds); Orientation must be vertical.

Media: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign are to be used as production tools. The assembly of your final 12 page document must be completed with InDesign.

Text: Limited to using only 1-2 the following fonts (Arno Pro, Adobe Caslon Pro, Garamond Premier Pro, Din Schriften, Futura, Helvetica)

Week 8 Day 2 (Wednesday , Oct 12)- Homework

Final Critique for Project 2 will take place next class, Monday, Oct 17 at 4:30pm.

What to submit:
1. Color printout of project on 11x17 (tabloid) plain white paper. **Write your full name on the back, in pencil. Pin to wall by Monday at 4:30pm. Projects pinned after 4:30pm will be considered late.

2. CD with project 2 files (organized as followed below:)

>>"Process Docs" folder (with PDF scans of all brainstorming and thumbnail sketches (for all potential topics and layouts)

Week 8 Day 1 (Monday , Oct 10)- Homework

Continue working on illustration layout comp for Project 2 in Illustrator. Final project critiques will be conducted during next, Monday, Oct 17 at 4:30pm.

Week 7 Day 2 (Wednesday, Oct 5) - Homework

Continue working on illustration layout comp for Project 2 in Illustrator. Mini group critiques will be conducted during next class, Monday, Oct 10 at 4:30pm. Print out your illustrator file for presentation in pre-selected small groups by start of next class (4:30pm).

Keep in mind your project must effectively instruct someone how to complete a specific task. Use of text is allowed as long as it follows the type requirements and is used sparingly. Use of color is optional, within appropriate taste and relevance.

Be sure to focus on the overall project objectives as well:

+ To gain experience with vector based drawing tools and techniques.
+ To reinforce design principles that support visual choices in creative problem solving solutions.

Week 7 Day 1 (Monday, Oct 3) - Homework

1. From books, design magazines, design annuals, find at least 3 examples of posters (must not be identical to examples shown in class, advertisement/movie posters are not allowed) that exhibit interesting visual layouts. Photocopy or scan/print your chosen three posters, then write up (for each poster) 2-3 sentences that clearly explain the use of various elements of design within the poster, and how the structuring of those elements engage the eye through use of specific principles of design. Be sure to consult previous lecture notes and use appropriate design terminology.

Be prepared to discuss your finding in groups next class session, Wednesday, Oct 5 @ 4:30pm.

2. Continue to work on the initial layout for Project 2. Midpoint group critiques will be conducted next Monday, Oct 10.
